Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday Nov 25 that Hong Kong is a part of China “no matter what happens” in the district elections that were held.
In a session with reporters after he met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo, “Any attempt to mess up Hong Kong, or even damage its prosperity and stability, will not succeed.”
According to the initial figures, the pro-democracy candidates have won 278 seats while the pro-Beijing candidates won 42. There were concerns that the vote could be affected by violence but it went ahead peacefully.
Many analysts view the election as a test of support for the government. This comes after months of unrest, protests and violence.
On the other hand, the government and Beijing was hoping that the election would reveal the “silent majority’s” support. This apparently went against expectations as a number of significant pro-Beijing candidates had already lost their council seats.
